Maps do more than describe the world. They shape what looks large, central and powerful. On 4 September 2026 the UN General Assembly voted 164 to 1 to endorse Equal Earth over Mercator through the "Correct the Map" resolution, sponsored by Togo on behalf of the African Union.

Here's why
Why size matters is not only a story about geometry. It is a story about which tools became authoritative, who circulated them and how a repeated image can shape our sense of the world.

Gerardus Mercator published his world map in 1569 for a practical age of ocean travel. Its great advantage was directional: a sailor following a constant compass bearing could plot that course as a straight line.
That clarity came at a cost. To preserve angles, the projection stretches the world more and more toward the poles. It was a powerful tool for navigation, not an honest comparison of land area.

Mercator did not invent his projection as colonial propaganda. But the map entered widespread use during centuries when European states were crossing oceans, claiming territory, administering colonies and printing their view of the world at scale.
Maps are never separate from the institutions that reproduce them. Navigation, trade, government, publishing and education helped make a European mapmaking convention feel universal. A useful sailing chart gradually became a familiar portrait of the planet.

On Mercator, Europe, Canada, Russia and Greenland expand. Africa, South America and South Asia appear smaller by comparison. Greenland, at 2.17 million km2, can look close to Africa, which is 30.37 million km2.
A map does not command us what to think. Repetition can still teach a quiet hierarchy: which places seem central, which seem vast, and which seem less consequential. The distortion is mathematical. Its cultural effect is about power and perception.

Cartographers have long built alternatives for different purposes. In the 1970s, Arno Peters brought public attention to equal-area mapping and argued that the familiar world map diminished equatorial regions. His campaign provoked fierce debate, including criticism from cartographers about his claims and the shape of his projection.
That controversy made one point difficult to ignore: choosing a world map is never neutral. Every projection preserves something and gives something else up. The right question is not which map is perfect, but which truth a map is meant to protect.

Equal Earth was published in 2018 by Bojan Šavrič, Tom Patterson and Bernhard Jenny. It is equal-area, so a unit of space on the page represents the same amount of land everywhere. Africa and Greenland can finally be compared fairly.
Its edges and shapes still bend because a sphere cannot be flattened without compromise. Equal Earth does not end distortion. It chooses not to distort relative area, and makes that trade visible.

Restoring Africa's scale is not the same as understanding Africa. The continent holds 54 countries, roughly 1.5 billion people and histories, languages, ecologies and futures that no single outline can contain.
The corrected map is an opening. It asks us to notice what inherited images have made small, then look again with greater care. Geographic truth matters because the stories built on top of geography matter too.
